The three structures wrap a central courtyard with generous eaves, breezeways, overhangs, and oversized doors that allow for a continuous flow from the inner courtyard through the interior spaces and out into the forests beyond. Clay tiles provide a rich texture that defines the roof as the primary spatial driver of the buildings. The structure tucks into the ledge, using an extension of the cast concrete foundation walls as the exterior wall surface. The building has two levels. The first floor includes a double height painting studio on the north end and a double height living space on the south end, connected by a cooking and dining zone in the center of the plan. Above the kitchen, the sleeping and bathing area is tucked like a wooded nest, fully wrapped in white oak with an oversized skylight framing the clouds. He moved to Stockbridge, Massachusetts when he was 8 years old and as a teenager and a free Black man became the trusted attendant and messenger of General Tadeusz Kosciuszko, a member of George Washington’s staff. Hull participated in nearly all of the major battles of the Revolutionary War and returned to Stockbridge at the age of 24, purchasing land on Cherry Hill Road at the age of 30. The house is clad with thin gray brick set with lime mortar, with local granite used at the window lintels and sills. The aggregation of the thin brick profile creates a highly textured effect across the building, regulated by the consistent geometry and proportions of the windows. The inner face of the library walls provides for book storage, and the outer perimeter of the library walls include a curving stair, two powder rooms, kitchen storage, and storage for a knitting studio. The Natural Dye Lab, located within the Printmaking studio and adjacent to the meadow that Sen cultivates annually for dye-making plants, is an expansion of Sen’s teaching, which combines printmaking, textiles, and the natural environment. A regular exterior rhythm of glass windows and doors takes in landscape views from four directions, while the airy interior is punctuated with blocks of saturated materials and textures, including mahogany, Verde Valsaguna green marble, Nero Marquina black marble, and brass. The interior material blocks do not touch the outside walls, and allow views and movement to wrap around them. Three peaked forms slope upward toward the trees and organize the plan into three areas: the garage, the sleeping area, and the living space. In section, this is a double house: one fully functional residential zone on the lower level can accommodate an independent caretaker while the upper level is fully accessible and entered on grade. The peaked forms are linked by glassy, flat-roofed connectors that allow for visual continuity across the site. The exterior of the lower level is sandblasted concrete, and the walls and roof of the upper level are wrapped in standing seam metal. The soft interior is a contrast to the angular exterior. Curved ceilings trace the underside of the peaked roofs, and are finished with hand-troweled plaster that is continuous with the interior walls. Along this monolithic surface, the windows frame a tapestry of trees on all four sides of the house. The land was once home to a beloved restaurant and bar called the Riverside Cafe, which was demolished by the city a generation ago. The land is now unbuildable due to its proximity to the river. The single existing built feature on the site is a guardrail along the sidewalk. We designed the Hat House to follow the four structural bays of the guardrail, tying into the guardrail’s posts to avoid the need for ground disruption. The length of the Hat House is divided into 16 cubbies in groupings of four within each structural bay. Every cubby has an interior hook for hanging free hats, and acrylic doors to protect the hats from the weather and to allow for access to the cubbies from both sides. The warm pink color is a contrast with the cold grays of the guardrail and neighboring chain link fence along the river’s edge. The three structures wrap a central courtyard with generous eaves, breezeways, overhangs, and oversized doors that allow for a continuous flow from the inner courtyard through the interior spaces and out into the forests beyond. Clay tiles provide a rich texture that defines the roof as the primary spatial driver of the buildings. The house is clad with thin gray brick set with lime mortar, with local granite used at the window lintels and sills. The aggregation of the thin brick profile creates a highly textured effect across the building, regulated by the consistent geometry and proportions of the windows. The first and second floor window rhythm remains consistent across all four sides of the house. The building has two levels. The first floor includes a double height painting studio on the north end and a double height living space on the south end, connected by a cooking and dining zone in the center of the plan. Above the kitchen, the sleeping and bathing area is tucked like a wooded nest, fully wrapped in white oak with an oversized skylight framing the clouds. He moved to Stockbridge, Massachusetts when he was 8 years old and as a teenager and a free Black man became the trusted attendant and messenger of General Tadeusz Kosciuszko, a member of George Washington’s staff. Hull participated in nearly all of the major battles of the Revolutionary War and returned to Stockbridge at the age of 24, purchasing land on Cherry Hill Road at the age of 30. A coordinating bead detail is used around window and door thresholds within this zone. The kitchen is a grouping of working tables and elements with singular and functional identities. Modern appliances are faced with matching beaded board within the cooking area. The house is accessed by way of a wooded path from the south, and opens onto a pool and meadow to the north. The exterior materials and detailing reference the era of the original structures on the property, including mossy green clapboards, black slate roof, and a brick chimney.
